WHAT with the economy and terrorism and the general all-round buffoonery of Donald Trump (if the school bully ran for office …) there are questions that have so far not been discussed by the candidates in this year’s presidential nomination campaigns.

For example, do the candidates believe in aliens, what would their response to alien contact be and how does a wall protect you from extra-terrestrial invasion? (A dome maybe. But could you get the little green – or blue or purple or polka-dotted – men to pay for it?)

Fortunately, when Fox News lets you down, there is at least Hollywood to pick up the slack. This summer’s tent pole film is Independence Day: Resurgence, a 20-years-after-the-event sequel to the original 1996 alien invasion movie (a hugely noisy, hugely successful combination of destruction – it’s the one in which they blew up the White House – and American exceptionalism).

The sequel is almost upon us. What can we expect? At time of writing, the film company is keeping things very close to its chest but if the trailer is anything to go by we can look forward to Bill Pullman looking very beardy, Jeff Goldblum being all Jeff Goldblumy and explosions. Lots and lots and lots and lots and lots and lots of explosions. Is that London blowing up? It certainly looks like it.
